I think the fisherman was betrayed by self-reliance because when it was dangerous to go out more than they should, he thought he could do it anyways and went out. His self-reliance causing him to think he was capable of the task , later to find out it has betrayed him because he can't, and the fisherman got stuck there. “He always swore he could go out in the bay blindfolded.” (Hall 321) The fisherman said in the story , which have obviously failed him you find out he can not always go blindfolded because he wasn't as good as he thought to do that.
